Established in Sydney in 1949, today the University of New South Wales is one of Australia’s leading research intensive universities and is ranked in the world’s top 50. It currently has over 50,000 student enrolments (including some 14,000 international students), offers more than 300 undergraduate and 600 postgraduate programs, and has developed an extensive network of alumni chapters throughout Asia.
Applications are now being sought from distinguished academic leaders, with senior strategic and operational management experience, for the highly influential position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at UNSW. The position will become vacant on the retirement of the incumbent in October 2012.
As a member of the University’s Executive Team, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) is responsible for providing visionary academic leadership, enabling UNSW to meet its aspiration to be a leader in the wider Asia-Pacific region. The position is specifically charged with furthering the development of the University and promoting its reputation for excellence through leadership of the key academic activities within the University.
Critical to success in the role will be the capacity to:

• understand and appreciate the values of UNSW and the roles of a major research university in an international environment
• provide leadership in a highly dynamic and changing environment
• be an advocate for and facilitate, where appropriate, significant change in the operations of the University
• promote a culture of innovation and collaboration across academic activities within the University, and to meet changing demands and to take advantage of new opportunities.
• demonstrate high order interpersonal skills.
Based in Sydney, but with significant international travel, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) will lead a team of Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Directors and Managers across a wide ranging portfolio that includes UNSW International, student matters, learning and teaching and Nura Gili Indigenous Programs.
