Director of the Bioethics Centre & Professor of Bioethics

The Bioethics Centre at the University of Otago wishes to recruit to its vacant Directorship an individual who has an international standing as an intellectual leader in the field of bioethics.
Established in 1988 in response to growing awareness of new ethical issues relating to law, medicine and technology, the Centre is rated as an Area of Research Strength in the University of Otago. The Centre's aims are to encourage and co-ordinate teaching and research, to stimulate informed public debate, and to provide a consultation and resource service for health professionals and others in the community.
Applicants must be committed to excellence in research and teaching, show outstanding research and publishing ability, and have an ongoing and active research programme that will attract external funding in the New Zealand research funding environment. Ideally, the successful candidate’s research interests should fit within one or more of the areas of research excellence within the Centre which include medical ethics, neuroethics, reproductive ethics, human enhancement, philosophy and mental health, sports medicine ethics, and cross cultural ethics.
It is expected that the successful applicant will enhance the international stature of the Centre and its relationships with equivalent centres. Applicants will be expected to contribute to courses run by the Centre at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as contribute to the teaching of medical and other health professional students. Supervision of Masters and PhD students is also required.
The successful applicant will be appointed as Director for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal. Appointment as professor will be confirmation path (equivalent to tenure track).
