The Dunedin School of Medicine, and its Department of General Practice have, over many years, been leaders in providing innovative learning programmes in rural medicine in New Zealand. This position will provide further support for rural health initiatives. It has been created with funding sought specifically for the purpose from the local community, to further develop rural medical education programmes and stimulate research on rural health issues.

The University of Otago is New Zealand’s most research-intensive university and is also the top-ranked university for research quality. The appointee will be expected to have a well-established academic and research background commensurate with the level of appointment.

The appointee will take the major role in consolidating Rural Health as an academic discipline in the School, and will help raise the profile of and knowledge about rural health issues in the community. A Section of Rural Health will be created within the Department of General Practice. However candidates will not be limited to rural general practitioners, acknowledging that rural health involves both primary and secondary care. It is also recognised that Rural Health is a multidisciplinary discipline, and any appointee is expected to understand and be able to encompass this philosophy.

This is a full time academic position. However the School recognises that the appointee may wish to include some clinical service provision as a part of that full time commitment and will assist the appointee to establish this.

Dunedin is a friendly University city positioned in a region of outstanding natural beauty. There is easy access to a hinterland with a wide range of sporting and outdoor activities. This is an exceptional academic and lifestyle opportunity in a safe environment, and a chance to be involved in progressing a strong strategic direction for the Dunedin School of Medicine.
